Flat buttocks are one of the most common aesthetic concerns of women requesting cosmetic surgery. Building the gluteus maximus muscle is difficult and toning up the buttocks by exercising is often harder than people might think. This explains why patients unsatisfied with the appearance of their buttocks seek improvements. There are several ways to correct imperfections and improve the appearance of this area.

Buttocks implants

Much like breast augmentation, there are procedures designed to improve the shape and size of the buttocks. The scar resulting from this procedure is located in the gluteal groove and the implant is positioned against the muscle. Recovering from buttock augmentation surgery includes restrictions, especially the seated position which is proscribed during a period of one month. Buttock augmentation with implants offers an immediate and durable volume increase. Similarly to breast implants, buttocks implants may have to be changed after a period of 10 years, but not necessarily.

Fat grafting buttock augmentation

Fat grafting buttock augmentation was introduced in the field of cosmetic surgery after buttock implants. Fat can be harvested in the abdominal or hip region. After being centrifuged or filtered, fat is reinjected in the buttocks area with no visible scars.

Flat buttocks are usually only lacking volume. Skin in this region is not sagging and does not include dimples. When the buttocks are sagging and present with excess skin, buttock augmentation cannot solely improve the appearance of the buttocks. Excess skin has to be removed, which requires a certain type of lifting (skin resection).

Treating the saddlebags

Saddle bags differ from other buttocks imperfections. Patients are often concerned about overly large buttocks when the problem really only concerns fat distribution in the upper side part of the thighs. The buttock can have a flat shape with significant saddle bags creating disproportions, the two imperfections in this case being unrelated. Saddlebags consisting in fat excess, often resulting from genetic predispositions, can be treated with liposuction.
