Is liposuction a good choice for me

You can benefit from liposuction if…

You can truly benefit from liposuction surgery if you have areas of persisting excess fat that may have always been there, caused by pregnancy weight gain or menopause (hips, lower back, loves handles and other areas where fat does not respond well to exercise and diet). Ideally, patients still have enough skin elasticity for the treatment area to retract after fat removal, which guarantees a smooth result (non invasive skin tightening treatments can help with skin retraction after liposuction if needed).

You cannot benefit from liposuction if…

Liposuction is not a good option if you want to alleviate cellulite since it does not address its cause. Liposuction does not treat varicose veins either, those can be treated with sclerotherapy, laser treatments and other options. Patients who will not benefit from liposuction or liposuction alone include patients with distended skin as a result from pregnancy or weight fluctuations. For these patients, skin elasticity is almost completely lost, which is why a skin resection procedure needs to be combined with liposuction for the result to look smooth and beautiful. Note that liposuction is not a weight loss procedure, which is why overweight patients are always advised to reach a normal and stable weight before considering liposcupture. Also, performing liposuction before weight loss will most likely deteriorate the result afterwards.

Liposuction does not affect cellulite, because it targets subcutaneous fat (fat under the skin) when the problem lies in the connective tissues beneath the skin. Patients presenting with varicose veins can choose the right treatment option before scheduling a liposuction. In case of chronic illness (obesity, hypertension or diabetes), the condition has to be under control before considering liposuction. Finally, for patients presenting with distended skin (excess skin, or flabby skin, resulting from weight gain followed by weight loss, a specific type of lifting is necessary to achieve a satisfying result (thigh lift, arm lift, tummy tuck…).
